Conception and Goals of the Museum City of

The adoption of the former capital of the province Eastern Prussia as a partner city by the City of Duisburg in 1951 led to the conception of the Museum City of Königsberg. The Museum opened its doors for the public on December 5, 1992,  replacing the old museum Haus Königsberg which had been established in 1968.

The permanent exhibits remember special events in the over 700 years of German history of this city, as well as trade and economy, the university and other cultural institutions, and the great figures of the intellectual and cultural movements. Included is also the Russian history of the city which is called Kaliningrad since 1946.

Changing exhibitions about different topics add to the permanent exhibits. Emphasis lies on collections about the provicincial history of Eastern Prussian, the city history, Immanuel Kant, E.T.A. Hoffmann, the estates of Ernst Wiechert and Otto Besch, Kaethe Kollwitz and the artists of the Academy of Arts of Königsberg.   A special area displays the amber that the region is famous for. Further collections are from the Society for the Local History of Eastern and Western Prussia e.V., PRUSSIA, and from smaller estates and loans.

The Museum possesses a library of approximately 4,500 books and a address database of about 300,000 names of former citizens of Königsberg and their families.

The Museum is operated jointly by the Stadtgemeinschaft Königsberg (Pr) with the Koenigsberg Foundation, and the City of Duisburg. The Museum is run entirely by volunteers.
